Abstract

This study aimed to analyze recent literature on textile recycling applied to fashion design, identifying methodological approaches, sustainable strategies, creative contributions, and challenges. A systematic review was conducted using PRISMA 2020, with an exclusive search in Scopus (2020 to 2025). From the initial screening of 164 records, duplicate studies were eliminated, and after the selection phases, 11 articles were included. The extraction was organized into matrices, and the analysis combined descriptive and thematic dimensions. The results showed methodological diversity (qualitative, quantitative, and reviews), as well as convergence in ecodesign, design for disassembly, reverse logistics, and digital traceability (IoT). It was reported that the use phase contributed the most to emissions and that extending garment lifespans consistently reduced impacts; furthermore, a 4% reduction in consumption was comparable to doubling recycling in certain contexts. Experiences in waste recycling (up to 76%) and improvements in educational and sustainable assessment were recorded, along with persistent barriers: mixed fibers, energy costs, low standardization, and insufficient infrastructure, in a context where textile recycling remained below 1% and much of the waste ended up in landfills. In conclusion, textile recycling proved viable and relevant, although it depended on innovation, regulatory frameworks, standardized metrics, traceability, and greater consumer acceptance
